Significance of Krishna Janmashtmi:

Shri Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashatami is annual Hindu festival celebrates the birth of Lord Shri Krishna, who was the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Janmashtmi is observed on the eighth day (ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Sharavan or Bhadrapad. On this auspicious occasion of birth of Bhagwan Krishna, people enact dance-dramas based on the life of Krishna according to Bhagavata Purana, sing devotional songs throughout midnight and fast through the day. Mathura being the birth place of Shri Krihsna and Vrindavan being the place he lived has the best of Janmashtmi celebrations in the whole world. Krishna Janma Bhumi (the birth place temple of Lord Krishna) is decorated in the most beautiful way possible and people also decorate their home temples to celebrate the same.

Krishna Janmashtami is also known as ‘Krishnashtami’, ‘Ashtami Rohini’, ‘Srikrishna Jayanti’ and ‘Sree Jayanthi’.

On Janmashtami, idols of infant Krishna known as Laddu Gopal, are washed, clothed and placed in a cradle while the home temples are decorated to celebrate Lord’s birthday. Kids also put lots of toys and fruits known as Jhanki for Laddu Gopal. The devotees then break their fast at the midnight and share foods and sweets.
